The 55th Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) Conference

Kyi Mar Wai, Masahiro Umezaki, Yichi Yang, Ken Itoh, Kazushige Ihara.「Understanding Successful Biological Aging in Japanese Community」 [Oral Presentation]
Telomere length (TL) is increasingly considered an indicator of biological aging, influenced by chronological age yet distinct from it. This study aims to identify individuals with successful biological aging (SBA), consider TL an indicator of biological aging, and identify the determinants of SBA among Japanese community dwellers. Since TL shortening is linked to age-related diseases and mortality, highlighting the potential benefits of mitigating premature TL shortening is crucial to prevent significant health risks.

Cindy Rahman Aisyah,Shoko Konishi.「Number of Children and Mortality Risk in The Indonesian Population」[Poster presentation]
We analyzed a dataset from the Indonesian Family Life Survey, a panel survey that contains health, social, birth, and marital history at the individual level. Our aim is to observe the association of the number of children with long-term mortality risk in the ever-married Indonesian population. We found out that compared to those without a child, people with children were significantly associated with lower mortality. However, after analysis by gender, the association was only significant in men but not in women. Another point is the lower mortality risk was not significant in people with two children. We assume it is because the two-children norm in Indonesia motivates couples to get sterilized after a second pregnancy or having two children. Further discussion on social and physiological aspects needs to be added.

Zhengjie Cai, Yuju Wu, Huan Zhou.「Gender differences in latent profiles of lifestyle behaviours and their associations with cardiometabolic risk among community-dwelling Chinese adults」[Oral presentation]
Our study aims to investigate gender differences in latent lifestyle behavior clusters among community-dwelling Chinese adults and the associations of these clusters with cardiometabolic risk. The result showed that gender differences in multiple lifestyle behaviors and their associations with cardiometabolic risk were observed among community-dwelling Chinese adults. This highlights the need for gender-specific comprehensive interventions against cardiometabolic risk.

The 55th Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) Conference 2024 has provided a unique platform to connect with public health professionals, researchers, and policymakers from diverse backgrounds across the Asia-Pacific region. Covering topics ranging from epidemiology and health policy to environmental health and health equity, the conference broadened my understanding of the region’s public health challenges. Overall, the conference was a highly motivating, insightful, and enriching experience.
